Iraq: 15 IS members killed, 6 US soldiers wounded

BagdadA US military operation in Iraq has killed at least 15 fighters from the Islamic State (IS) militant group and wounded at least six American soldiers, three US defense officials said yesterday, NBC News reported.

None of the injuries suffered by the U.S. soldiers were described as life-threatening. Several were possible traumatic brain injuries and at least one soldier suffered external injuries, defense officials said.

The operation took place on Thursday in Anbar, western Iraq, officials said. Some of the dead IS members held leadership positions.

The US Central Command (Centcom) said in a statement last night that the raid in collaboration with Iraqi security forces took place on Thursday morning.

The IS operatives were “equipped with numerous weapons, grenades and ‘suicide’ explosive belts,” Centcom said.

“This operation targeted ISIL leaders to disrupt and degrade their ability to plan, organize, and carry out attacks against Iraqi civilians, as well as U.S. citizens, allies, and partners throughout the region and beyond,” Centcom said, adding that there were no reports of civilian casualties.
