– “The Korean government is holding 7 billion dollars (about 7.6 trillion won) hostage.”

This is the claim of an Iranian government spokesman regarding the capture of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Korean chemical carrier,’Korea Chemie’.

According to Reuters, Iranian government spokesman Ali Ravieri said this at an online press conference on the 5th (local time).

A spokesman for Ravieri dismissed the claim that Iran’s capture of Korean ships was a hostage act, refuting that “Korea is holding Iranian funds 7 billion dollars hostage.

“We are used to such arguments,” he added, “but if there were hostages, it would be the Korean government that froze our $7 billion in funds for groundless reasons.”

Iranian Revolutionary Guards captured and detained the Korean national ship’Korea Chemie’ in the Gulf waters (Persian Gulf) at 10 am the previous day on the basis of marine pollution.

DM Shipping, a shipping company of Korea Chemie, completely denied the allegations of marine pollution.

The South Korean government protested with the Iranian ambassador, demanded the prompt lift of the detention of ships and sailors, and dispatched Choi Young-ship, a member of the Cheonghae unit, to the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident occurred when South Korea joined the sanctions against Iran by the US, an ally, and freeze accounts of $7 billion in oil imported from Iran, resulting in conflict.
