During a visit to the capital Beirut on Saturday afternoon, Iran’s foreign minister threatened Israel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Reuters reports.
– Every Israeli step in the direction of a broad military attack against Lebanon will be Netanyahu’s last day, said Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
– Do not want escalation
During a press conference, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian denied that Iran has tried to escalate the conflict in the Middle East.
– War is not the solution. Only a political agreement can end the war in Gaza, Amir-Abdollahian said.
Iran has for a number of years supported Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. When Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October last year, Hezbollah also began attacking targets in the north of Israel, in the border areas between Israel and Lebanon.
Since then, there have been regular clashes between Hezbollah and Israel in this area, and several thousand residents, on both sides of the borders, have been internally displaced.
Attacks by Iran militias
Iran also supports a number of other armed militias in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
Several of these groups have recently attacked US forces and targets in the Middle East, and the US has responded to these attacks.
The Houthi militia in Yemen, which is also supported by Iran, has been attacking civilian and military ships in the Red Sea for a long time. The United States and Great Britain have responded to these attacks.
