Over the past day, supporters of the Iranian opposition have taken to the streets in several capitals around the world to protest against the new president, Ebrahim Raisi. They believe he should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity.
Demonstrators were on their feet in Berlin, London, Brussels, Washington and Dam Square in Amsterdam. The demonstrations were part of the Free Iran World Summit, an online conference organized by Iran’s National Council of Resistance.
The chairman of that council, which seeks to overthrow the regime from abroad, emphasized Raisi’s role in the execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988 in a speech broadcast online.
Raisi was then a judge of the ‘death commission’, which determined who should be executed. Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International also hold Raisi partly responsible for the executions.
Pompey
Western celebrities also attended the conference. For example, former US Secretary Pompeo gave a speech in which he the recent presidential election dismissed it as a sham, given the small number of candidates allowed to participate.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry calls Western involvement in the protests hypocritical. A spokesperson speaks in a tweet of an “anti-Iran obsession”.
