Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said Sunday that the West cannot stop Tehran from developing nuclear weapons if it wants to develop a military nuclear program. His announcement came amid growing tensions between Iran and the West over its nuclear program.
“The talk of Tehran’s nuclear weapons is a lie and they (the West) know it,” Khamenei said.
“We don’t want nuclear weapons because of our religious beliefs. Otherwise, they would not have been able to stop us,” Khamenei said, quoted by the country’s official media.
“There is nothing wrong with the agreement, but it is forbidden to touch our infrastructure or nuclear industry,” Khamenei said.
He added that Iran will continue cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the basis of mutual understanding between them.
Khamenei’s words came in the shadow of indirect talks between Washington and Tehran in Oman, which were reported by Walla! on the weekend. The indirect talks came amid growing White House concern over Iran’s progress on its nuclear program and the Biden administration’s push to find a way to stop the escalation. During the talks, the Americans warned that Iran would pay a “high price” if it enriched uranium to the 90% level needed to develop nuclear weapons.
Earlier, the Cursor wrote that the United States and Iran denied the information that an agreement could be reached between them.
In addition, Iran has supplied Russia with a new batch of kamikaze drones for strikes against Ukraine.
