Iranian Soldiers Sentenced up to 10 Years in Prison for Shooting Down Ukrainian Airline Plane

Court Iran handed down various prison sentences, with the maximum being 10 years in prison, against 10 members of the country’s Armed Forces. The Iranian soldiers were found guilty in the incident shot down by a Ukrainian airline plane last year 2020.

As reported AFPMonday (17/4/2023), Iranian military forces shot down a plane belonging to the airline Ukraine International Airlines with flight number PS752 shortly after the passenger plane took off from Tehran on January 8, 2020. At least 176 people died in the incident.

Most of those killed were Iranian and Canadian nationals, with some having dual citizenship.

According to a report by the Mizan Online website, which is managed by the judicial authority, on Sunday (16/4) local time, an Iranian military commander received the heaviest sentence, namely 10 years in prison, for violating an order by shooting down the civilian plane.

Nine other Iranian military personnel, according to Mizan Online, were sentenced to between one year and three years in prison.

Mizan Online said that a commander for the Tor M-1 surface-to-air missile system “fired two missiles” at the passenger plane “contrary to orders” and without obtaining permission.

The identity and rank of the Iranian soldiers who were sentenced were not disclosed.
