Iranian Singer Mehdi Yarrahi Arrested for Releasing Controversial Song, ‘Roosarito’

Iranian singer Mehdi Yarrahi has been arrested for releasing a song. In Roosarito, which means ‘your headscarf’ in Farsi, he calls on women to take off their obligatory headscarves. With the call, Yarrahi would violate the strict Islamic dress code.

Yarrahi’s arrest comes nearly a year after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She died in prison after being arrested because her headscarf did not fit properly.

Her death sparked months of mass protests across Iran. Men and women spoke out for more women’s rights and many women took off their headscarves.

The 41-year-old Yarrahi speaks in it Roosarito his support for the protest movement. In the song’s music video, women can be seen with uncovered hair.

According to the Iranian court website Mizan Online, Yarrahi was also charged for another song. He released that in October and was also heard at many protests.
