Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy Seizes Foreign Tanker in the Persian Gulf with Contraband Fuel: US Military Intervention Prevented

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s naval forces have captured a foreign tanker in the Persian Gulf that was carrying over one million liters of contraband fuel. This was announced today by the commander of the fleet of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard – Rear Admiral Ramazan Zirahi, quoted by the semi-official Iranian agency Tasnim, BTA informs.

The large amount of contraband fuel was seized at Iran’s southern sea border on June 6. The foreign tanker received military support from the US Navy, but Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy prevented US military action in the Persian Gulf, Zirahi claimed.

According to him, while the Iranian authorities inspected the oil tanker that was carrying Iranian gas oil, the US forces took a series of unprofessional and dangerous measures to stop the legal seizure of the fuel.

The oil tanker’s captain contacted the US Navy’s command and control center to arrange an escape, Zirahi said, adding that a US officer instructed the tanker’s captain to shut down the engine and wait for US military forces to come to the rescue.

According to the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s fleet, the Americans sent two combat and one reconnaissance aircraft, two helicopters, an unmanned aerial vehicle, as well as patrol ships to prevent the operation to capture the vessel.

Iran’s forces acted professionally, issued stern warnings to all US aircraft, drones and ships and brought the oil tanker to the port of Bushehr for legal proceedings, Iranian news agencies said.

On July 7, Iran’s Fars news agency reported that the Revolutionary Guard had seized a ship carrying 900 tons of contraband fuel with a crew of 12, following a court order.

In another incident last week, the US Navy said Iranian naval forces fired multiple shots at another Bahamian-flagged tanker, the Richmond Voyager, owned by US oil company Chevron. According to the authorities in Tehran, the ship was involved in a collision in which five people from the crew of an Iranian vessel were injured.

Chevron denied that the tanker was involved in a collision, adding that it had not been notified of any legal proceedings or court orders regarding the vessel.
