TEMPO.CO, Jakarta — A prominent general in the Corps Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) was killed in an Israeli airstrike that killed the commander Hizbullah Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut, Iranian media reported on Saturday, September 28, 2024.
The killing of General Abbas Nilforushan marks the latest casualty suffered by Iran as the Israel-Hamas war that has lasted almost a year in the Gaza Strip is almost turning into a regional conflict.
His death has put more pressure on Iran to respond, even as Tehran has said in recent months that it wants to negotiate with the West about sanctions that are crushing its economy.
Nilfourushan, 58, was killed on Friday in an attack in Lebanon that killed Nasrallah, a state newspaper said Times of Tehran.
Ahmad Reza Pour Khaghan, Iran’s deputy justice chief, also confirmed Nilforushan’s death, describing him as “a guest of the Lebanese people,” the state news agency reported. IRNA.
Khaghan also said Iran had a right to retaliate under international law.
The United States Treasury Department has designated Nilforushan as the IRGC’s deputy chief of operations. The US government sanctioned him in 2022 and said he had led an agency “directly responsible for suppressing protests.”

The sanctions come amid months of protests in Iran over the death of Mahsa Amini after she was arrested for allegedly not wearing a headscarf or hijab, as police had expected.
Nilfourushan also served in Syria, supporting President Bashar Assad in his country’s decades-long war that began the Arab Spring in 2011. Like many of his colleagues, he began his military career at during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.
In 2020, Iranian state television announced that he was a “comrade” of General Qassem Soleimani, the Quds Force commander who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad that year.
