The 27-year-old artist, whose song “Baraye” became the anthem of the protest movement that spread across the country following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini in September 2022 – and won the prize for “Song for Social Change” at the 65th Grammy Awards −, is accused of“propaganda activities against the Islamic Republic” and D’“incitement to riot”, reports IranWire.
It is the singer himself who “announced the verdict in an Instagram post on March 1, also revealing a two-year ban on leaving the country,” added the news site.
Hajipour’s conviction “raised concerns” among opposing circles, especially since the singer “has no criminal record. His song appears to be the sole basis for the accusations and conviction,” deplores IranWire.
