Iran has executed four people linked to the Israeli intelligence service Mossad. This was reported by the Mizan news agency affiliated with the judiciary. The four are said to have “taken actions against the security of the country”.

The news agency speaks of a “sabotage team” led by Mossad officers. The four were said to have been killed after “legal proceedings”. No further details have been released.

Israel and Iran have been arch enemies for years. Iran has supported Hamas since the start of the war, although the country denies involvement in Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. Iran also supports other opponents of Israel in Lebanon and Syria, among others.

Hundreds of executions in 2022

According to human rights organization Amnesty International Iran is one of the countries that carry out the most executions. In 2022, the death penalty was carried out at least 576 times. It is only known that this happens more often in China.

The number of executions in Iran rose sharply last year because the regime wanted to crack down on anti-government protests.
