Tehran. Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian said Sunday that the Islamic Republic is not seeking war, but promised an “appropriate response” to Israeli bombings against Iranian military sites.
“We do not seek war, but we will defend our nation and our country,” Pezeshkian declared at a Council of Ministers. “We will give an appropriate response to the aggression of the Zionist regime,” he added.
On Saturday, Israel bombed Iranian military facilities in response to Tehran’s attack on October 1, to avenge – according to the Islamic Republic – the death of Iranian-backed militiamen and a commander of the Revolutionary Guards.
Israel warned that Tehran should not respond to its bombings.
Pezeshkian blamed rising regional tensions on Israel’s “aggression” and US support for the country, which Tehran does not recognize.
“If the Zionist regime’s aggressions and crimes continue, tensions will increase,” said the Iranian president.
Pezeshkian added that the United States promised to “end the war if we showed restraint, but failed to keep its promise.”
Iran has urged an end to the war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the October 7, 2023 attack by fighters from the Islamist movement Hamas in southern Israel.
Iran also supports other armed groups in the region, including Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah movement, which also opened a front against Israel in support of Hamas.
