Iranian police arrest prominent soccer players during a raid on a New Year’s Eve party

Iranian media reported that police briefly arrested a number of prominent soccer players, whose identities were not disclosed, during a raid on a New Year’s Eve party where alcoholic beverages were served.

And the semi-official “Tasnim” news agency reported that several current players and former members of an unspecified football club were arrested in Tehran during a party held east of the capital.

The agency said “some of the players were in an abnormal state due to alcohol consumption,” without going into further detail.

The Young Journalists Club news agency said the rally was a birthday celebration and added that all the detainees have been released except for one person, who is not a football player.

“A lawsuit has been filed against the detainees, and the details will be revealed later,” Fars news agency said, quoting the prosecutor.

There were no immediate comments from the Iranian Football Federation.
