Iranian minister: Do not get a visa to attend UN meeting in New York NOW

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif does not receive a visa to attend United Nations meetings in the US city of New York. That is what Zarif says on Tuesday at a speech in Tehran, according to news agency AP, while the killed General Soleimani was buried in his native village.

According to Zarif, the US is “afraid that someone will come to their country and reveal truths,” writes AP. In the same speech, the minister said that Iran “will set fire to places that support the US attack on General Qassem Soleimani.”

The headquarters of the United Nations is located in New York. Delegates from member states gather here for, among other things, the General Assembly and the Security Council. As a host country, the US must allow foreign delegates to attend such UN meetings. The UN has not yet responded to the American decision.

Iran already contacted the United Nations on Friday. In a letter to the Security Council and Secretary General António Guterres, UN ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi invoked the right to self-defense. According to Iran, the air attack to General Soleimani on Friday an example of terrorism and a “major violation of fundamental principles of international law”.

Secretary-General Guterres called the situation in the Middle East during a speech Monday “the greatest geopolitical tension of this century”. He warned of “more unpredictable actions with unclear consequences”. Iran has sworn revenge after the General’s death.

Soleimani is buried Tuesday at home

Soleimani is buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Kerman. Iran has had three days of national mourning and several large-scale processions have been organized in honor of the army leader.

Soleimani was General of the Quds Unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRG). The United States sees the IRG as a terrorist organization and killed Soleimani on Friday morning in an air raid. In addition, the Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi Al Muhandis was killed.
