Iranian-made Drone Used by Militia in Attempt to Kill Iraqi Prime Minister

BAGHDAD – Attempted assassination of the Prime Minister (PM) Iraq Mustafa Al-Kadhimi was carried out by at least one Tehran-backed militia. Militants use drones loaded with explosives made in Iran.

The information was disclosed by security officials and militia sources on Monday (11/8/2021).

Mustafa Al-Kadhimi escaped unharmed when three drones targeted his residence in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone on Sunday (11/7/2021).

Two drones were intercepted and destroyed, but a third drone was detonated, damaging the building and injuring several of the Iraqi PM’s personal bodyguards.

The incident sent tensions soaring in Iraq, where powerful Iran-backed paramilitaries protested the results of last month’s legislative elections that saw them lose a landslide election and greatly reduced their power in parliament.

Many Iraqis fear the tensions could turn into a full-blown civil conflict if similar incidents occur further.
