Iranian Lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh Arrested and Beaten at Burial Ceremony: Latest Updates

Iranian lawyer and human rights activist Nasrin Sotoudeh was severely beaten and arrested during the burial ceremony of Armita Geravand, the girl who died on Saturday, a month after she was attacked by a subway guard for not wearing a headscarf. Soutoudeh’s husband, Reza Khandan, said this on his social media accounts, adding that he had no information from his wife following her arrest.

Several Iranian sources said around 15 activists and relatives of Geravand were violently beaten and then arrested on Sunday. Sotoudeh and many other women attended the burial without veils. At the time of yesterday’s arrest, the 60-year-old lawyer was out of prison on medical leave because she is serving a 12-year prison sentence following a conviction in
2018 after the accusation of having “encouraged corruption”, defending in court two women who had appeared in public without the veil.

In the past, she had already been arrested many other times, always on charges related to the use of the veil, such as “damaging the mental safety of the public by not wearing the hijab”.

In the complaint on social media, Sotoudeh’s husband said that Manzar Zarrabi, who lost four members of her family in the Ukrainian plane shot down “by mistake” by the Revolutionary Guards near Tehran in January 2019, was also arrested. 2022 and the activist Massoud Zeinalzadeh.
