Iranian High School Student Armita Garavand Dies After Falling into Coma: Controversial Circumstances and Nationwide Protests

Iranian high school student Armita Garavand, who fell into a coma under controversial circumstances in early October in the Tehran subway, died on Saturday, AFP reported, citing local media.

“Armita Garavand, a student who lived in Tehran, died an hour ago after intensive treatment and a 28-day stay in a hospital in a special care unit,” the Borna news agency, linked to Iran’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, reported.

Armita Garavand was reported to have fallen into a coma after being detained by police for improperly wearing a hijab, Reuters recalled. Iranian authorities have already rejected claims by rights groups that the 16-year-old girl was injured after an October 1 confrontation with officials enforcing the mandatory Islamic dress code in Tehran’s subway.

News that Armita Garavand is brain dead could revive nationwide protests sparked by the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini, who died in custody in September last year after being detained by morality police, also for not following Islamic rules for dressing, notes Reuters. Armita Garavand, 16, is also of Kurdish origin.
