The judge said it was an attempted murder. For example, Rezgar P. said when he was arrested that he wanted to stab the man “as often as possible”.
According to the victim, P. acted on behalf of the Iranian government. De Leeuwarder, who has lived in the Netherlands since 1985, was formerly chairman of the Kurdish Democratic Party Iran (KPDI) in Europe. This party is banned in Iran. The Public Prosecution Service has found no concrete evidence of a political motive. The court therefore did not condemn P. for an organized attack.
Disorder
The victim was stabbed in front of the train station around noon. He would meet P. for the first time. P.’s father and the victim used to be classmates in Iran. P. had been living in Rotterdam for a few months. He had made an appointment with the victim by telephone. P. went to Leeuwarden by train and brought a bunch of flowers with him. He stabbed the victim in and outside his car with a large knife. De Leeuwarder was injured in his head, chest, abdomen and arm, among other things. He is virtually blind in his right eye. Dozens of bystanders witnessed.
The Public Prosecution Service had demanded sixteen years in prison. According to the judge, P. is partially accountable. “There are sufficiently strong indications that he acted under the influence of a disorder,” the judge said. No diagnosis has been made at the Pieter Baan Center.
