Iran Won’t Allow ISIS to Come to Afghanistan’s Borders

ACCEPTANCEIran will not allow the Islamic State (ISIS) group to be present on the border of Afghanistan and Iran. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi warned against it on Saturday (18/9/2021).

“We will not allow terrorist organizations and ISIS to be established near our borders and attack other countries and regions,” Raisi said at the end of a visit to Tajikistan.

“The presence of ISIS in Afghanistan is dangerous not only for Afghanistan but also the region,” he told state television.

The Taliban seized the Afghan capital on August 15, taking advantage of the vacuum caused by the withdrawal of US troops from the country and the collapse of the Afghan military.

Iran, which has a 900 -kilometer border with Afghanistan, did not recognize the Taliban during their rule from 1996 to 2001.

But Tehran appears to be softening its tough stance against the Taliban lately in the name of pragmatism.
