Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on Monday, in response to a question about an Israeli raid that killed two Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen in Syria last week, that Tehran “will respond to any attacks on its interests in Syria.”

As “military advisers” in Syria, they were killed in an Israeli raid, the first Iranian casualties to be announced during the war in Gaza, according to Reuters.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, since the beginning of this year, “Israel has targeted Syrian territory 56 times, including 41 air strikes and 15 ground strikes, which resulted in the destruction of about 115 targets, including weapons and ammunition depots, headquarters, centers, and vehicles.”
Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes on Syria since the outbreak of the war in 2011. However, it is rare for Israel to confirm carrying out strikes in Syria, but it reiterates that it is determined to confront what it describes as “Iran’s attempts to establish its military presence” in that country.
Israel’s strikes mainly targeted Iranian-backed factions and Lebanese Hezbollah members, in addition to Syrian regime forces’ positions, but it has intensified these attacks since the start of its war with Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, on October 7.
