About one million tons of cargo will be transported by rail between Turkey and Iran this year, Turkish authorities said on Tuesday, according to reports. Anadolu Agency.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure said in a statement that a recent memorandum of understanding signed at a meeting of railway representatives in the Turkish capital Ankara on January 12 and 13 would open a new era for rail transit.
Despite the new coronavirus pandemic, in 2020 there were three daily rail services between Turkey and Iran, carrying 564,000 tons of cargo, according to the statement.
The statement also announced that freight trains would also run between Turkey and Pakistan via Iran with a common fare between the three countries. He added that talks are still taking place to fix this rate.
With the recent completion of the rail line between Iran and Afghanistan, it will now also be possible to transport goods between Turkey and Afghanistan.
“Following the completion of the rail connection between Iran and Afghanistan on December 10, 2020, it will be possible for a wagon loaded in Turkey to transit from Iran to Afghanistan.”
The railway administrations of Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan will meet in the coming months to set the course for rail transport between Turkey and Afghanistan.
The statement adds that efforts are underway to create a freight transport corridor through Iran between Europe and China.
