U.S. deploys warship in Gulf waters The USS Nimitz, which arrived in the Gulf with several warplanes, is anchored off the coast of Hormuz, claiming that the “Iran threat” is not over. The Pentagon had earlier ordered the immediate recall of the USS Nimitz, which has been a permanent presence in the Gulf since November.
The United States has previously strengthened its military presence in the region, fearing retaliation on the first anniversary of the bombing of Iran’s military chief Qasim Sulaimani. Although the Army, Navy, Air Force, warplanes and missiles were mobilized en masse, Iran’s verbal retaliation temporarily calmed the region. However, Iran’s policy of retaliating for the assassination of Qasim Sulaimani has prompted the US to withdraw its decision to withdraw the USS Nimitz.
Qasim Sulaimani was killed on January 3 last year in a drone strike in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, an Iraqi military leader, was killed in the attack.
On Sunday, the anniversary, people took to the streets across Iraq to demand the immediate withdrawal of US troops. Protests also intensified in Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen.
