Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Australian ambassador to Tehran, Ian McConville, on Tuesday after the Australian diplomatic mission in the country disseminated a message in favour of the LGBT community, an issue considered “offensive” to the Iranian authorities. Thus, it has conveyed its protest against the actions of the Australian Embassy, which it has accused of publishing content that “breaks the rules” and has strongly condemned these actions. “This content is offensive and contrary to Islamic and Iranian principles. It is necessary to prevent this from happening again,” the Ministry has pointed out in a statement. In this sense, it has warned that this type of actions by the Embassy “are contrary to International Law and the Vienna Convention, which governs the behaviour of political representatives when it comes to respecting the rules and regulations of the Government that hosts them.” However, the Australian Embassy stressed that it did not seek to insult the people or values of Iranian society and stressed that the country was not named in the message in question, which was disseminated with the aim of creating a “safe environment for all, especially for LGBT communities.” In this regard, the ambassador assured that the concerns of the Iranian authorities will be conveyed to the Australian Government.
