The Israeli army on Tuesday announced the launch of an operation in southern Lebanon, which it described as a limited and precisely targeted action aimed at destroying the positions of the militant movement Hezbollah. Hezbollah, however, denied that Israeli troops had entered Lebanese territory.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army spokesman said in the morning that heavy fighting was taking place in southern Lebanon with members of the Lebanese movement, and later called on residents of more than 20 border villages to evacuate. The military also said it had launched more than 70 small cross-border raids into Lebanon over the past year, destroying Hezbollah positions.

After 18:00 CEST on Tuesday evening, the Israeli military announced that Iran had launched a missile attack on Israel and urged residents to take shelter. The alarm lasted about an hour. According to the rescuers, two people were slightly injured by the shrapnel, while others were slightly injured when they fled to cover. A rocket blast killed at least one Palestinian in the West Bank.

Unnamed Israeli officials told Axios that Iran had fired 200 missiles. According to Tehran, 80 percent of the missiles hit the target, while Israel says it destroyed most of them in the air. President Joe Biden ordered US troops to provide Israel with help in destroying Iranian missiles. Some missiles were destroyed over Jordan and Syria.

100,000 refugees

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Tuesday that Lebanon is experiencing one of the most dangerous periods in its history. He already stated on Sunday that the number of displaced persons could reach one million, while 5.5 million people live in the country. On Monday, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi announced that more than 100,000 people had already fled to Syria. There are also Lebanese among them.

The launch of the Israeli ground operation provoked widespread diplomatic reactions. Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of the member states of the European Union already discussed the situation on Monday; however, a joint statement calling for an “immediate ceasefire” between Israel and Hezbollah was blocked by the Czech Republic. According to Czech diplomacy, the statement unilaterally limited Israel’s right to self-defense against terrorists from the Lebanese movement.

Russia, Spain and the UN Human Rights Office have expressed serious concerns about further destabilization of the region and the consequences for civilians. New NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he hopes for an end to hostilities in Lebanon as soon as possible. Ankara described the Israeli ground operation as an invasion attempt.

Germany and France, among others, condemned the Iranian missile attack. On the contrary, he was welcomed by the terrorist movement Hamas, which is an ally of Tehran. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the escalation in the Middle East and criticized the violation of Lebanese sovereignty in response to the Israeli ground operation.

Evacuation of the Czechs

Due to the further escalation of fighting between Hezbollah and the Israeli army, a number of airlines have again announced the cancellation of flights to Tel Aviv and Beirut. The Netherlands and Turkey announced the evacuation of their citizens from Lebanon. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said on Tuesday that in the previous weeks, the Czech Republic had evacuated several citizens from Lebanon through a Ukrainian and Hungarian special.

With the intention of destroying Hezbollah’s infrastructure, Israel has intensified its airstrikes on Lebanon in the past two weeks. In doing so, he destroyed many military facilities of Hezbollah and killed a number of its commanders, including the leader of the movement, Hassan Nasrallah.

At the same time, however, civilians are also dying. In total, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, more than 1,000 people have already died and thousands more have been injured. Some countries, including the United States, designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. The European Union considers only its military wing to be a terrorist organization.

The Israeli army has been fighting Hezbollah since the 1980s, and since last October they have been shelling each other daily across the border. Last year, clashes broke out on October 8, a day after Hamas attacked southern Israel, where Palestinian militants killed 1,200 people.

Hezbollah is an ally of Hamas, as is Iran, which attacked Israel from the air back in April. The war in Gaza, where Israel is waging a retaliatory offensive, has claimed more than 41,600 lives, according to Palestinian sources, without distinguishing between civilians and Hamas fighters.
