Iran retaliates for death of IRGC commander
“Sirens and explosions all over Israel.”
US, UK provide support for Israel’s defense
Iran launched an airstrike against Israel on the night of the 13th (local time), firing dozens to hundreds of armed drones and missiles.
This comes 12 days after Israel bombed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, on the 1st and eliminated a high-ranking commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC). It is also Iran’s first full-scale attack on mainland Israel.
Iran previously seized a container cargo ship said to be linked to Israel in the Strait of Hormuz, a major crude oil transport route. Following this, an airstrike was carried out late at night on the weekend, sending the situation in the Middle East into a crisis of full-scale war escalation.
Israel has also warned that it will respond if Iran’s retaliation becomes a reality. The extent to which Israel, which has been hit by an airstrike, responds will likely determine whether the war will escalate in the future.
According to local authorities and multiple foreign media, the Israeli military explained that Iran launched more than 100 bomb-laden drones toward Israel.
Israeli military chief spokesman Daniel Hagari first reported the start of Iran’s airstrikes around 11 p.m. on this day. The Israeli military explained, “Iran fired a drone at Israel from within its territory,” and “Israeli fighter jets and ships are on alert.”
The IRGC claimed to have successfully struck targets inside Israeli territory, saying, “We launched dozens of drones and missiles toward occupied areas and positions of the Zionist regime (Israel),” Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported.
IRNA news agency quoted another source as saying, “Iran’s first ballistic missile was launched against a target deep inside Israeli territory.”
The U.S. NBC broadcast cited Biden administration officials and reported that Iran appears to have launched about 400 to 500 drones.
Some believe that Iran’s latest retaliation is in accordance with the Qisas principle of Islamic law (an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth). The Associated Press and Al Jazeera emphasized that this was the first full-scale attack against Israel since the Islamic Republic was established in Iran through the 1979 revolution.
Iran named this attack ‘Operation Truth Promise’ to punish Israel for its crimes.
“Any country that can open its territory or airspace to Israel for attacks on Iran will receive a stern response from us,” Iranian Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Garaesh Asitani was quoted as saying by Iran’s state-run Press TV.
Israeli broadcasting channel Channel 12 predicted that the drone from Iran would arrive in Israel around 2 a.m. on the 14th after midnight local time. Some media outlets predicted it would be around 2:30. Reuters reported that sirens and explosions were heard throughout Israel, including Jerusalem, around 2 o’clock local time.
Islamic ‘Axis of Resistance’ militants led by Iran, Hezbollah, and Yemeni rebels Houthis are also reported to have participated in the attack on Israel.
Israel also moved urgently and began to respond. The United States and the United Kingdom are providing support for Israel’s defense. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office explained that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency cabinet meeting to respond.
Israeli aviation authorities announced that they would close the airspace from 00:30 on the 14th local time in response to this airstrike. It is reported that US and British fighter jets shot down some drones launched by Iran in the skies of neighboring countries Iraq, Syria, and Jordan.
The U.S. White House announced that “Iran has launched an airstrike against Israel” and that U.S. President Joe Biden is being briefed on the situation by the national security team. The White House emphasized, “The United States will stand with those who confront the threat of Iran and support their defense.”
