Iran today launched dozens of drones against Israel in its promised response to this country’s attack on its consulate in Damascus, Syria, which caused numerous deaths, including two generals.
Media outlets such as the news portal Ynet and the electronic newspaper The Times of Israel indicated that the unmanned devices will take six to nine hours to arrive, and specified that the targets could be military objectives.
The spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, confirmed the fact and called on citizens to follow the rules because “we have an excellent defense system (…) but it is not airtight.”
After hearing the news, in a message to the country, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to attack the Muslim nation, which threatens a major escalation in the region.
“We are ready for a direct attack from Iran and we will respond in the same way,” said the right-wing politician, who faces a wave of international criticism for his aggression against Gaza.
Tehran accused Netanyahu’s administration of bombing its consulate in the Syrian capital on April 1, resulting in the deaths of commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The United States, as well as several Western powers, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, have closed ranks with Israel in recent days by warning Iran against carrying out its revenge.
Several American officials went further and stated that the Pentagon will participate in the defense of Israel, although some media speculated that it could also join the attack.
The topic was the focus of talks two days ago between the chiefs of the IDF General Staff, Herzi Halevi, and the US Central Command, General Michael Kurilla, who made a brief visit.
The bombing against the consulate generated a wave of international condemnation and increased criticism of Netanyahu, who is already on the ropes for the crimes committed by his troops in the Gaza Strip.
