Iran reported 12 new deaths from coronaviruses and the number of infections shot up 50 percent

The death toll from coronavirus increased by 12 and reached 66 in Iran, among 1,501 infected, while the authorities have warned that they will severely punish those who try to profit by hoarding items such as masks.

The Deputy Minister of Health for Hygiene Affairs, Ali Reza Raisi, reported Monday that they have been confirmed in the country 523 new infections, of which 12 have died, while 291 people have recovered.

The number of infected has seen exponential growth in recent days in Iran, as the Ministry of Health had foreseen, after 14 days had passed since the first cases registered and by having more means of diagnosis.

– –

Raisí explained that there are already 22 laboratories throughout the country doing the tests, which has made it easier for the figures to be “up to date”. As on the eve, the greatest number of new infections has taken place in the province of Tehran (225), followed by Qom (62) and Guilán (53).

Among the authorities there are several cases of contagion, from the Vice President for Women’s Affairs, Masumeh Ebtekar, to another of the Deputy Ministers of Health, Iraj Harirchí, and several deputies.

Given the reported corruption that promoted the shortage of products such as masks and disinfectants, the head of the Judiciary, Ebrahim Raisí, today ordered prosecutors across the country to “have no mercy with the hoarders of hygiene and medical items.”

– –

“The health of the people is not negotiable (…) To monopolize hygiene items in the current situation is to play with the life of the population and cannot be forgiven,” Raisí said.

In this regard, Iran’s attorney general, Mohamad Yafar Montazeri, said that these crimes against health can be legally considered as “corruption on earth,” a charge that can carry even the death penalty. 358 files have already been opened for sale at high prices or the hoarding of masks and disinfectants, among other hygiene products to prevent coronavirus.

In total, more than 6 million masks, 22,000 liters of disinfectant, 16,000 liters of alcohol and 127,000 packages of disposable gloves that were stored have been discovered.

To prevent the spread of coronovarius, the authorities have closed schools and universities and canceled all kinds of cultural, sporting and religious events, such as Friday’s public prayer.

– –

Another measure announced on this day is the sending of medical equipment to the houses to detect possible cases of infected people, according to Health Minister Said Namakí.

– –

In addition, enlistment for military service has been delayed. General Taqi Mehri, head of the Military Service Organization, reported today that young people starting on March 9 should not show up until April 20.

– –

The fear that the coronavirus will expand in prisons has also led the authorities to temporarily release certain prisoners who do not serve sentences for serious crimes.
