(Tehran = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Seung-min = The Iranian government has announced that it will not cooperate with the United Nations investigation into allegations of human rights abuses in the process of cracking down on anti-government protests in the country.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani drew the line in a regular press conference held simultaneously online and offline on the 28th (local time), saying, “We will not cooperate with the political fact-finding team formed by the Human Rights Council of the United Nations”.
“The United Nations resolution against Iran does nothing to address human rights issues,” Kanani said.
The United Nations Human Rights Council held a special meeting on the 25th and passed a resolution through a vote to form an international fact-finding team to investigate illegalities that occurred in the process of responding to protests in Iran.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk also urged the Iranian government to stop using asymmetric force against protesters.
On this day, Kanani’s spokesman also said that the anti-government protests were promoted by Western countries, including the United States, and that he had obtained hard evidence to prove them.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the German ambassador to the country to protest the same day for leading the UN Human Rights Council resolution related to anti-government protests.
In Iran, protests spread across the country in September after Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, 22, was reported to have died suddenly after being picked up by police for violating a dress code, such as showing her hair through the hijab.
The Iranian news agency for human rights activists (HRANA) counted that 448 protesters, including 63 minors, had lost their lives as of the 25th.
