Iran: Receives first batch of Russian Su-35 fighter jets – 2024-04-21 06:01:49

The amassing of Russian troops and equipment near Ukraine’s border has caused worries in Kyiv and in the West that Moscow could be planning to launch an invasion. Russia, the United States and its NATO allies are meeting this week for negotiations focused on Moscow’s demand for Western security guarantees and Western concerns about a recent buildup of Russian troops near Ukraine. Iran will receive within the next few days the first batch of the latest generation of Russian Sukhoi SU-35 fighter jets, Iranian media reported today.

Iran had bought the fighter jets in November, according to the website of the Etemad newspaper. The first delivery is scheduled to take place within the next few days.

No further details have been released, but according to reports, Iran will receive a total of 24 new fighter jets.

The Islamic Republic’s defense ministry announced last year that the country had acquired Mi-28H and Yak-130 attack helicopters from Russia in addition to the SU-35s.

Following the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal, which was intended to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and the subsequent reimposition of Western sanctions, Tehran has intensified its relations with Moscow.

The West accuses Iran of supporting Russia with logistical military support in Moscow’s war against Ukraine, specifically that Tehran supplies Moscow with so-called kamikaze drones, which the West says have been used many times in the war in Ukraine .

Tehran denies these Western claims.
