TEHERAN – Vice President Iran for parliamentary affairs, Mohammad Hosseini, has announced that Iran is ready to help reconstruct Syria , following a decade of ongoing conflict in which Tehran is involved.

In a meeting with the Syrian Ambassador to Iran, Shafiq Dayoub, Saturday (11/12/2021), Hosseini stated that the Iranian government under the new president Ebrahim Raisi gave great priority to expanding relations with neighboring countries and the region, especially Syria, which referred to as strategic allies and partners.

“Tehran will make every effort to continue to assist the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad and to protect its territorial integrity from the Syrian opposition and foreign countries, including in assisting the reconstruction of parts of the country under Assad’s rule,” Hosseini said.

Hosseini also repeated Iran’s calls for US troops to withdraw from Syria and Iraq – where they continue to have a military presence and influence. This condition is the same as when they were forced to leave Afghanistan after 20 years. According to Hosseini, they are still stealing Syrian oil and surprisingly the world does not condemn this US behavior.

Dayoub’s visit to Tehran and Hosseini’s assurances of support come nearly a month after Iranian and Russian diplomats met to also discuss cooperation in Syria’s reconstruction. During the civil war in Syria, both Russia and Iran have supported and militarily assisted the Assad regime.

Many predict that since Damascus has largely reclaimed much of its former territory, Moscow and Tehran will compete for a large share in rebuilding Syria, for deals and influence.

Recent years, however, have seen rifts emerge in relations between the Assad government and Iran. A month ago, Assad was reported to have shunned and demanded the removal of Iran’s top general in Syria, proving to many that the regime is increasingly suspicious of Tehran’s role and influence in the country.
