Iran Punishes Woman with 74 Lashes for Violating Public Morality: International Outcry and Protests

Woman sentenced to 74 lashes for allegedly violating public morality. In Iran, the woman was punished for sharing the picture of her head uncovered on social media. People are protesting against the incident all over the world. Activists and politicians described the punishment as ‘inhumane’.

According to the report of ‘Misan’, an industry website here, a young woman named Roya Heshmati has been punished for sharing a picture without hijab and participating in the protest against hijab. According to the report, Roya also encouraged others not to wear hijab. The Meezan Online website alleged that Roya Heshmati appeared without a hijab in crowded public places in Tehran and encouraged the non-wearing of the hijab.

The government contends that Roya has been punished according to law and Sharia law for violating public morality. Mizan also says that after the Islamic Revolution of 1979, all women here are obliged to forget their necks and heads.

Roya was initially sentenced to 13 years in prison, a 12m riyal fine and 74 lashes. However, her imprisonment was later revoked after an appeal. According to Hengaw, a Kurdish-focused human rights organization, Roya is a 23-year-old woman of Kurdish origin. She was arrested from her own home in April for allegedly posting a photo on social media without covering her head. The picture showed her wearing a knee-length black skirt and a red top and walking down the street without a hijab.

At the same time, Iran witnessed huge protests in the name of Mahsa Amini, who was killed after being detained by religious affairs police for violating hijab laws. However, there were attempts to suppress all of them very brutally. Moreover, a year after Mahsa Amini’s murder, Iran tightened its hijab laws.

Now, following Roya’s conviction, there has been a lot of criticism and anger both inside and outside the country.
