Two Israeli sources told Axios that Israeli intelligence agencies believe Iran is preparing to attack Israel from Iraqi soil.
The report comes after CNN reported, citing a senior source, that Israel’s recent attacks on Iran will be met with a “definitive and painful” response, likely to come before the US presidential election.
Axios notes that carrying out the attack through pro-Iranian militias in Iraq rather than directly from Iranian soil could be an attempt by Iran to avoid another Israeli strike against strategic targets in Iran.

“Iran’s attack with drones and ballistic missiles”
The sources said Israeli intelligence suggested the attack was expected to be carried out by Iraq using a large number of drones and ballistic missiles.
The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, said on Thursday that Israel was wrong to attack Iran last week and stressed that Iran’s response would be “different from any scenario” Tel Aviv had expected.
