Dozens of Iranians took to the streets of Tehran to show their support for the drone attacks on Israel.

Iran launched over 300 drones and missiles

Iran launched more than two hundred explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles against military targets in Israel overnight Saturday into Sunday, in retaliation for an unprecedented direct Israeli bombing of its consulate in Damascus on April 1. attack by the Islamic Republic against Israeli territory.

At the same time, Iran’s allies, notably Yemen’s Houthis and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, have also launched attacks against Israel, with the former launching drones and the latter launching two drones against the occupied Golan Heights.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet later in the day, whose Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the “serious escalation”. Also later in the day, G7 leaders are expected to discuss coordinating a “unified diplomatic response” to Iran’s “shameless” attack, US President Joe Biden announced.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose army has been waging a war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian enclave that has suffered massive destruction since October 7, spoke by phone with US President Biden after a meeting of his war cabinet, officials said. his services.

Mr. Biden reiterated in that conversation “unwavering” US support for Israel, according to the White House.

However, according to a source at the news site Axios, Mr Biden also sought to discourage a possible Israeli counterattack on Iran.

Announcing at around 03:30 (local and Greek time) today that the Iranian attack was still ongoing, the Israeli military said that Iran had “launched a massive swarm of 200 killer drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles”, the “vast majority ” of which it was intercepted and destroyed.

“A number of Iranian missiles landed on Israeli territory, damaging a military base but causing no casualties,” the spokesman added.

For its part, the IRNA news agency claimed that the “largest airbase in the Negev”, in southern Israel, “suffered serious damage”.

Early in the morning, in a new speech by Admiral Daniel Hagari, it was clarified that “more than 300” drones and missiles were launched and that 99% were destroyed. The captain-in-chief, assuring that the attack was “prevented”, described it as “very serious” and added that it “is pushing the area towards escalation”.

While Iran claimed the US remained “on the sidelines” of the conflict, the US armed forces helped Israel shoot down “almost all” of the drones and missiles, US President Biden and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced.

The head of the American Pentagon demanded that Tehran proceed with de-escalation, adding that “we do not seek war with Iran, but we will not hesitate to act to protect our forces and support the defense of Israel.”

Iran’s attack was in retaliation for the April 1 bombing that destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, killing at least 16 people, including seven members of the Revolutionary Guards, including two lieutenant generals of its Quds Force, which is in charge of Iranian operations abroad. The Islamic Republic blamed Israel, which has neither confirmed nor denied it.
