Iran has signed a memorandum of accession and full membership to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Reuters reported on September 15. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Samarkand by the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and the organization’s secretary general Zhang Ming.
The former Russian foreign minister Sergej Lavrov he has repeatedly declared Moscow’s full support for Iran’s entry into the SCO, which will give further weight and authority to this organization.
The main objectives of the organization in accordance with the SCO Charter of 2002 are to strengthen mutual trust, friendship and good neighborliness, to encourage effective cooperation in the political, commercial, economic, scientific, technical, cultural, educational, energy fields. , transportation, environmental and other fields.
SCO members are Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, India. Iran, prior to its full membership, was an observer to the SCO along with Afghanistan, Belarus and Mongolia. Azerbaijan, Armenia, Nepal, Cambodia, Turkey and Sri Lanka are the organization’s dialogue partners.
