“Iran Executes Two for Blasphemy: Latest in a String of Executions in 2021”

Tehran ∙ Two people were hanged in Iran on charges of blasphemy. Yusuf Mihrad and Sadrullah Fazili Sari were executed in Arak prison in central Iran. Both were arrested in 2020, who were part of a social media group spreading religious criticism.

Iran has executed 203 prisoners so far this year. Most of them were arrested in connection with the months-long anti-government protest. According to Iran Human Rights, 582 people were executed in 2022 and 333 in 2021. Although Iran has the highest death penalty in the world, executions for blasphemy are rare.
