Iran Executes First Person Sentenced To Death Over Protests | Abroad

Iran has carried out the first execution of a person sentenced to death for his role in the country’s large-scale protests. This was reported by the Iranian news agency Tasmin. People may have been executed earlier, but this hasn’t been announced.

It would be a man who injured a police officer during a protest in the capital Tehran and blocked a road. For this he was sentenced to death. The protester had filed an appeal, but the Supreme Court rejected it.

According to Amnesty International, at least 21 people have been sentenced to death in Iran for participating in the protests. The human rights organization calls those sentences the result of “show trials designed to intimidate protesters”.

Mass demonstrations have been taking place in Iran since mid-September for more freedom and against the regime in Tehran. Thousands of people have been arrested during these protests, which the authorities consider riots.

According to Human Rights Watch, around 450 protesters were killed by Iranian security forces during the protests.

The wave of protests is the largest in years for Iran and began after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The woman of Kurdish origin died after being arrested by the morality police for not wearing the veil correctly.
