Iran executed opposition journalist Zama

Zam, 47, the son of reformist Mohammad Ali Zama, ran the popular Amadnews news channel. He shared videos of protests, critical information about Iranian politicians on the Web, and had 1.4 million followers on the encrypted Telegram communications application. Iranian authorities later blocked it, inciting a violent uprising. Later, however, the website began operating under a different name.

Zam was sentenced to death in Iran this June. Last October, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had been transported to Iran as part of a complicated covert operation. They did not say where the operation took place. His death sentence was criticized by France, which granted him asylum after fleeing his homeland, Reuters reported on Saturday.

Mass demonstrations for which Zam was convicted erupted at the end of 2017, initially due to rising prices. Eventually, they grew into anti-government protests. Authorities responded by blocking social networks, killing more than 20 people and killing thousands more. Tehran called the events, which lasted until January of the following year, a conspiracy organized from abroad.
