Iran denied today that it has supplied ballistic missiles to Russia, days after the US said there would be a strong international response to any such move.
Earlier this week Reuters, citing six sources, reported that Iran had supplied Russia with a large number of powerful surface-to-surface ballistic weapons, deepening military cooperation between the two countries subject to US sanctions.
The US administration of President Joe Biden yesterday warned Iran of a “swift and severe” response from the international community if the Islamic Republic has provided ballistic missiles to Russia.
“Despite legal restrictions on ballistic missile sales, Iran is morally bound to refrain from arms deals during the Russia-Ukraine war to prevent war from igniting”the Iranian delegation to the United Nations said in a post on X.
“(This) stance is based on Iran’s adherence to international law and the UN Charter”he added.
The Iranian drones that Russia had acquired
UN Security Council restrictions on Iran’s exports of certain missiles, drones and other technology expired in October.
However, the US and EU maintained sanctions on Iran’s ballistic missile program amid concerns about arms exports to its Middle East proxies and Russia.
Iran initially denied supplying drones to Russia, but months later admitted it had supplied a small number of drones before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
