Iran denies sending military equipment to Armenia

TEHERAN – Ministry of Foreign Affairs Iran denied reports about the delivery of weapons and military equipment to Armenia. The news came amid armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan of Nagorno Karabkh.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said Iran was carefully inspecting goods that crossed its borders.

“Iran will not allow any weapons and ammunition to be sent,” he told a press conference in Tehran as quoted from Anatolia, Tuesday (29/9/2020).

The spokesman said that non-military goods were still crossing between Iran and neighboring countries as usual, adding that trucks suspected of carrying weapons were carrying normal commercial products.

Violence raged on the front lines between Azerbaijan and Armenia on Sunday after Armenian troops attacked civilian settlements and military positions in Azerbaijan.

Relations between the two former Soviet countries have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Upper Karabakh, also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan.(Also read: The Armenian War with Azerbaijan, This Is A Comparison of Its Military Strength)

The four UN Security Council and two UN General Assembly resolutions, as well as many international organizations, demand the withdrawal of the occupying forces.
