Iran calls for fourth COVID-19 vaccine for all age groups

The Iranian Ministry of Health announced this Friday that it will impose the fourth COVID-19 vaccine for all age groups. “Everyone should take the fourth dose in the near future so that we can continue to control the pandemic in the country,” said Iran’s Deputy Health Minister Kamal Heidari.

With this measure, the country seeks to achieve 95 percent immunity, as explained by the deputy minister. Until now, Iran had only requested the second booster dose for people over 70 years of age.

Currently more than 64 million Iranians have received the first vaccine — out of a total of 84 million residents –, almost 58 million have received two doses and more than 27 million have also received the booster dose. Due to the vaccination program, the situation in the country has improved compared to its peak, in August 2021, when more than 700 people died and 50,000 were infected in a single day.

According to the Ministry of Health, this Friday Iran has registered six deaths and 185 new infections. In total, the country has registered more than 140,000 deaths and more than seven million infections from coronavirus since the pandemic began in the first quarter of 2020.
