The Iranian authorities announced this Wednesday that they banned at least 12 actresses who are prohibited from working for having been in public spaces without the mandatory veil in this Islamic Republic.
“Those who do not respect the law will not be able to work,” the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Mohamad Mehdi Esmaili, told reporters.
Iranian media reported Tuesday that a dozen actresses who violated rules requiring the wearing of the Islamic veil are banned from acting in films, including well-known performers such as Taraneh Alidoosti, Katayoun Riahi and Fatemeh Motamed-Aria.
Iran saw a wave of protests last year over the death of a 22-year-old woman who died while in detention for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women.
Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, died during protests and thousands were detained for participating in demonstrations that Iranian authorities described as “riots” orchestrated by Western countries.
During the protests, several actresses and celebrities appeared unveiled on social media.
Taraneh Alidoosti – who was imprisoned in 2022 for supporting the protests – is one of Iran’s best-known actresses and has appeared in films with renowned director Asghar Farhadi, including the Oscar-winning “The Client.”
In Iran, it has been mandatory for women to cover their necks and heads since 1983, after the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
