The Iran-backed Houthis control much of Yemen and are part of the “axis of resistance” against Israel. Since the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group “Hamas” began on October 7, the Houthis have launched several drones and missiles towards Israel, increasing tension in the region.
“These attacks pose a direct threat to international trade and maritime security,” the US military’s Central Command said. “We also have good reason to believe that these attacks, although carried out by the Houthis in Yemen, have been fully facilitated by Iran,” the statement said.
The US warship “Carney” on Sunday morning spotted a ballistic missile that was fired from the Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen at the Bahamas-registered ship “Unity Explorer”. The missile hit near the ship. Soon after, the Carney shot down the approaching drone, but it was unclear whether the drone was targeting a US warship, Central Command said.
About 30 minutes later, the missile also hit the Unity Explorer. Responding to its call for help, Carney shot down another flying robot. Central Command said the missile caused minor damage to the Unity Explorer.
Missiles hit two more commercial ships on Sunday, Number 9 and Sophie II, both registered in Panama. The ship “Number 9” reported damage, but stated that no one was injured. The Sophie II reported no major damage, Central Command said.
While going to the rescue of the Sophie II, the US warship shot down another UAV.
Since October 7, “Carney” has also shot down several rockets fired by the Houthis in the direction of Israel. The Carney was not injured in any of these incidents, and no injuries were reported on board.
