Iran attacked Israel with hundreds of ballistic missiles – 2024-10-01 21:44:55

Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday night in response to the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Israeli officials said nearly 200 missiles were fired from Iran during the attack, which came in two waves.

Israeli air defenses were activated intercepting 180 of them, with the rest hitting targets in central and southern Israel according to the IDF spokesman. The country’s emergency service reports that two people have been injured in the attack.

Palestinian media reported that a man was killed by rocket fragments in the community of Nuweima, near Jericho in the West Bank, at the time of the attack.

Residents were told to go to shelters, while warning sirens sounded almost across the country.

The Revolutionary Guards immediately after the start of the attack warned that if Israel retaliates they will attack it again. They stressed that the missile attacks are in retaliation for the killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and the deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guards in Lebanon Abbas Nilforoushan.

In fact, the US Security Council is holding an emergency meeting under Joe Biden, as announced by the White House.

KYSEA is holding an extraordinary meeting

The rapid developments in the Middle East have alarmed Athens, which will assess the situation and its next steps at a meeting of the Governmental National Security Council (KYSEA) on Wednesday, at 4:30 p.m., chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

At the same time, at the request of Cyprus, a Greek transport aircraft C-130 goes to Lebanon in order to free Cypriot citizens.

“Green light” from Biden for American assistance

President Joe Biden has ordered the US military to help defend Israel against Iranian attacks and shoot down missiles aimed at Israel, the White House National Security Council announced on Tuesday.

In an official statement, the White House states that Iran’s attack was not effective. “We are doing everything we can to defend Israel,” said national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Khamenei gave the order

The order to fire missiles at Israel was given by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, senior Iranian officials told Reuters. In fact, Khamenei has already been transferred since last week to a safe location after the assassination of Nasrallah.

“With God’s help, the blows of the rebellion front will become stronger and more painful on the worn and rotten body of the Zionist regime,” Khamenei said in a message.

Iranian state television, for its part, reported that 80% of the missiles fired at Israel hit their targets.

Before the attack, Iran informed both the US through diplomatic channels and Russia. The White House denies this information.

“We will answer”

IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari says Israel will respond to an Iranian missile attack on the country. “We are on heightened alert in defense and attack, we will protect the citizens of Israel. This attack will have consequences. We have plans and we will act at the time and place we choose,” he said.

At the same time, the IDF issued a message, informing the citizens of Israel that they can now leave the shelters.

Netanyahu: Iran made a big mistake, will pay for it

Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that the missile attack had failed and announced retaliation.

“Iran made a big mistake tonight and will pay for it,” Netanyahu said at the start of a Security Council meeting.

“The regime in Iran has not realized our determination to defend ourselves nor our determination to take revenge on our enemies,” Israel’s prime minister said.

Condemnation by the UN

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the “widening of the conflict in the Middle East, where one escalation follows another”

“This has to stop. We definitely need a ceasefire,” he stressed

“This is only part of our strength”

The president of Iran, Massoud Pezheskian, also made statements. In his post on X, he says: “Based on legal rights and with the goal of peace and security for Iran and the region, a decisive response was given to the aggression of the Zionist regime. This action was to defend the interests and citizens of Iran. Let Netanyahu know that Iran is not a warmonger, but stands firm against any threat. This is only a part of our strength. Don’t get into a conflict with Iran.”

The Foreign Ministry condemns the attack

“The Greek government strongly condemns Iran’s attack on Israel. This is a serious escalation that increases the threat to regional security. Greece stands by the people of Israel and their right to live in security. “Greece reaffirms its call for immediate de-escalation,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says.
