Iran: At least 10 dead in a terrorist attack against police officers in the south of the country –

At least 10 police officers were killed in an attack on an Iranian police convoy in the southern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, authorities said. Details remain scarce about the attack in Gohar Kukh, about 1,200 kilometers southeast of the Iranian capital Tehran.

Initially, the reports simply described an attack by “criminals” without further details. But shortly afterwards, Iranian state media reported that 10 officers had been killed.

HalVash, an advocacy group for the Baloch people of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, posted photos and video of what appeared to be a truck painted with the green stripe used by Iranian police vehicles. A photo circulating online by the group showed what appeared to be the bodies of two police officers in the front seat of the truck.

HalVash said the attack appeared to have targeted two security forces vehicles and that all their occupants were killed. The truck appeared to have only bullet damage and not the use of explosives.

State news agency IRNA reported that Eskandar Momeni, the country’s interior minister, had ordered an investigation into the incident, which it described as causing the “martyrdom of several police officers”.

Authorities have not identified any immediate suspects in the attack, nor has any group claimed responsibility. The attack came after Israeli retaliation across Iran early Saturday morning.

The Baloch regions of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan have been facing an insurgency by Baloch nationalists for more than two decades. Verifying information remains difficult in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan, where violence involving heroin traffickers has occurred for decades.

The province is one of the least developed parts of Iran. Relations between the region’s predominantly Sunni Muslim population and Iran’s Shiite theocracy have long been strained.

Meanwhile, the Taliban said they were investigating reports that Afghan migrants were killed by Iranian security forces in the region earlier in October, an incident that threatens to further strain relations between the two countries.
