Iran Approves Tougher Penalties for Violating Dress Code Rules: Fines and Prison Sentences Increased

Iran has approved tougher penalties for violating dress code rules, a year after massive demonstrations against them. The new penalties for wearing a headscarf incorrectly can amount to a fine of 5,000 euros or fifteen years in prison.

People can now receive fines of up to 11 euros or prison sentences of ten days to two months for violating the clothing rules. These penalties will therefore become much heavier.

The new law must tackle people who set an example even harder. They can be banned from working for fifteen years. 10 percent of their assets can also be confiscated.

Furthermore, distributing photos showing people who do not comply with the rules is punishable with fines or prison sentences. There will also be heavier penalties for insulting women wearing a headscarf. Under the new law, people can get up to six months in prison or up to 74 lashes for this.

The law will be introduced on a trial basis for three years. According to the petitioners, the law should support the head covering, the hijab, and prevent the promotion of nudity.

The Council of Guardians, the country’s highest legislative body, must still approve the law. The council tests all new laws against the Islamic faith and the constitution. Because the council consists of conservative Muslims, it is almost certain that it will agree with the law.

Tightening comes year after Mahsa Amini’s death

Iran’s dress code laws have been under fire for some time. Last year, Iranians took to the streets en masse after the death of Mahsa Amini. She died on August 16 at the police station, three days after she was arrested for wearing a headscarf incorrectly.

Protesters burn hijabs and cut their hair. 22,000 people were arrested and 7 people were executed.

Small demonstrations took place on Saturday to commemorate Amini’s death, but large-scale actions were not forthcoming. At least 260 people were arrested.

The authorities had significantly tightened security measures prior to this day. For example, security forces were spotted and access to the internet was restricted.
