Iran accuses US of meddling after presidential election

DUBAI (Reuters) – Iran accused the United States of meddling on Tuesday after statements by Washington that Friday’s presidential election was neither free nor fair, Iranian state media reported.

A spokesperson for the US State Department said on Monday that the United States viewed the electoral process which made Ebrahim Raisi the president-elect of Iran “quite fabricated”.

“We regard this statement as interference in our internal affairs, contrary to international law, and reject it,” Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabiei said, quoted by state media.

“The US government is not in a position to have the authority to express its views on the election process in Iran or any other country,” he added.

Ebrahim Raïsi, a hardline supporter who is subject to US sanctions for human rights abuses, won the Iranian presidential election last week in a poll marked by the voter apathy in the face of economic hardship and political restrictions.
