The death of Arezoo, who was an Afghan national and lived in the Iranian city of Shahrari, was confirmed by Tehran’s General Department of Education in a statement that said the girl was “injured due to falling from a building. He was immediately taken to the hospital and despite the efforts of the medical team, he died,” the statement explained.
Wear jeans on an outing
While the agency said the “motives and reasons for this action” have not been determined, human rights activist Masih Alinejad said in a post on X that Arezoo was put to death after “she was forced to return from a school trip for violating the dress code by wearing jeans instead of the prescribed uniform’.
The teenager had also faced repeated harassment from the school for not complying with the dress code policy, Masih Alinejad claimed, and also claimed that Arezoo had been threatened with expulsion after she was filmed dancing without a hijab.
Complaint against the school by her father
After Arezoo’s death, her father filed a formal complaint against the school accusing it of negligence and indifference, Alinejad said.
