Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Duarte Pacheco called for cessation of war Russia over Ukraine to the Russian Parliament. He made this statement when giving a speech at the 144th IPU forum which was held in Bali.
“We call on parliament to the Russian federation, this invasion is condemned and must stop and not stop it tomorrow but right now,” Duarte said in his remarks, Sunday (20/3/2022).
Duarte called on the Russian parliament to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. In addition, he repeatedly asked Russia to provide space for dialogue to resolve the conflict between the two countries Russia and Ukraine.
“We ask them to do something to find a peaceful solution to this conflict. So I call on them to try to give an opportunity to dialogue, we ask to give an opportunity to dialogue as the best way to dispute,” he said.
Because, Duarte said the war only caused casualties from both sides. On the other hand, war also actually causes poverty in a country.
“In war those who make sacrifices are the people and the people can this be true in Ukraine but also in Russia. Where, sanctions will eventually lead to even more poverty, inequality and despair,” Duarte said.
Previously, the 144th IPU was held in Bali on March 20-24, 2022. One of the issues that will be discussed at the event is the resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
This was conveyed by IPU President Duarte Pachecho during a press conference in Bali, Saturday (19/3/2022). According to him, the 144th IPU will discuss the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“Yes, we will discuss important actions regarding Ukraine. It is not possible when there is a war to discuss other issues, we will discuss these issues (the Russia-Ukraine conflict) and make a resolution for it,” Duarte said.
Duarte said he firmly rejected the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He said that dialogue and ceasefire are the main topics that must be prioritized because of the large number of victims who died in the conflict.
“So, of course it is impossible to accept this (Russian invasion) in today’s world. Dialogue is very important, but of course a ceasefire is the most important. Without it, people will die every day, children. A ceasefire is essential,” he explained. .
