iPhones dominate 5G smartphone sales

iPhones are number one in sales worldwide if all 5G smartphones are taken into account, which is helping the market to overtake sales of 4G mobiles.

Apple dominates 5G smartphone sales

According to the office Counterpoint Research, 37% of 5G smartphones sold worldwide in January were iPhones. This was possible thanks to the sales of the iPhone 12 and especially the iPhone 13, these models having been available for a few months now. The iPhone SE 3 also supports 5G, but this model will only be available from tomorrow.

Samsung is in second place with 12% of 5G smartphone sales. The rest of the top 5 follows with Xiaomi and Vivo each accounting for 11% of sales and Oppo having a 10% share. The other manufacturers are grouped together in the remaining 19%.

Also according to Counterpoint Research, smartphones supporting 5G accounted for 51% of sales in January. The demand is therefore higher than that of 4G smartphones. It must be said that many Android smartphones (regardless of price) support 5G and Apple has been doing it since 2020 with the iPhone 12. This naturally helps in terms of sales.

China, North America and Western Europe were the main drivers of this growth. China has the highest 5G penetration rate in the world at 84% in January. 5G smartphone penetration for North America and Western Europe reached 73% and 76% respectively. Apple dominates North America and Western Europe with a sales share of over 50% and 30% respectively.
