You know that story about that iPhone X that got a USB-C connection? It was eventually sold for a huge amount. The device was sold for an amount of no less than $ 86,000.
It’s unreal, but true: technology student Ken Pillonel’s iPhone X has sold for $86,000. Last month the design surfaced and it became clear that it will eventually be sold on eBay. A logical step, because it is the only iPhone X with a working USB-C connection on the market. Although the person who bought it undoubtedly did not keep an eye on the news. Last week it became clear how you too can make sure it works.
iPhone X with USB-C sold
Getting the USB-C port on the iPhone X to work wasn’t very easy. First, Pillonel had to completely reverse engineer the Apple C94 connector. He then made his own circuit board with a female USB-C port. He then made the schematics for the project and extensively tested the whole. When it finally turned out that everything worked as intended, he was finally able to build the port into the iPhone X.
After the project was successful, Pillonel didn’t see the fun in it anymore. By providing the iPhone X with a working USB-C port, he had made his point. He decided to put the device on eBay and eventually sold it for an amount of (converted) 75,000 euros. The new owner of the only Type-C iPhone had to agree to a list of conditions. For example, he may not repair, update or delete the iPhone, not alter or tamper with the internal parts or use the device as for daily use.
Apple and Europe
Apple has always used its own Lightning port for the iPhone. With this custom iPhone X, Pillonel just wanted to show that the tech giant can easily switch from the existing Lightning port to a USB-C port. If Apple decides to make this change, it will certainly affect Apple’s market share in Europe in the future. The European Commission obliges manufacturers to launch products with a universal connection: a USB-C port.
Whether Apple will ever equip the iPhone with its own USB-C port remains to be seen. The company probably prefers to supply a separately purchased cable.
